For research in pregnancy, childhood, normal ageing and ageing in diabetes there is a lack of diabetes registries (national and international).  With diabetes of long duration (50-60 years) this also means that people already diagnosed with diabetes can ‘lose’ this diagnosis when admitted to hospital or long-term care, resulting in confusion and inappropriate treatment. Research on cost -effectiveness and its application to health care policy require such long-term data. For example morbidity from gestational diabetes mellitus is often mild and treatment expensive.
